TEDxNHS Unlocked – Frequently Asked Questions

TEDxNHS Unlocked:FAQs

What is TEDxNHS Unlocked?

These events will bring people together in a unique space to watch a TEDxNHS talk, to share reflections and ideas in conversation with the TEDxNHS community, and to leave refreshed, energised and with a sense of purpose.

Unlocked by definition is a TEDxNHS salon event which aims to capture the magic of our live talks in a virtual space. These sessions will bring people together to watch a brand new TEDxNHS talk, to share reflections and ideas in conversation with the TEDxNHS community, and to leave refreshed, energised, with a sense of purpose and set of actions to create positive change.

The first TEDxNHS Unlocked series will be held during March and April 2021 and will explore an overarching theme of Health Inequalities, specifically focussing on food poverty, race and death and dying.

Will this virtual series of TEDxNHS Unlocked events replace the live TEDxNHS event?

No – we are all very committed to holding an annual TEDxNHS event for our growing community. However, like many other face-to-face events we have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In March 2020 the team took the difficult decision to postpone TEDxNHS 2020. The Covid-19 outbreak meant that it was vital to focus our resources to where it was most needed, and to ensure that our health and care community was supported in response to this global pandemic. We are continuing to monitor the ongoing situation, and any decisions about future TEDxNHS events held face-to-face will be made in line with Government advice and guidance.

What does TEDxNHS Unlocked look like?

TEDxNHS Unlocked aims to capture some of the magic of our live events in a virtual space. Whilst it will look and feel different, our ambition is the same: to spread great ideas through the power of storytelling, inspiring us to think differently, dream bigger and design better for the population we serve.

The first series of Unlocked experiences will feature a brand new TEDxNHS talk with the chance to reflect on the thoughts, ideas and debate of an expert panel. Injecting some TEDxNHS magic to the proceedings we will also be including mindfulness activities and a mix of musical and spoken word performances.

TEDxNHS Unlocked events will last for 2.5 hours and you can register to secure your place via the  website.

Why is there a charge for tickets?

TEDxNHS is run entirely by volunteers working within the UK’s health and care space, who freely give their time to help organise these fantastic events. We are able to fund TEDxNHS through the incredible generosity of our strategic partners and sponsors, without whom it would simply not be possible. To ensure that we can cover the cost of running the live events, we have previously charged for tickets. Whilst it is significantly less to run the TEDxNHS Unlocked virtual events, there are still production costs involved.

To ensure that we can run TEDxNHS Unlocked for the benefit of our community, we are asking audience members to contribute where they feel they can by way of a donation. Our tiered approach to purchasing tickets means that people can contribute £10, £15 or £20 towards an individual episode or can purchase a season ticket which provides access to all three for £25.

There is also an option to obtain a ticket at zero cost, which we hope will enable those struggling financially at this time to join and enjoy these events. Any surplus monies contributed will go towards funding future series’ of TEDxNHS Unlocked.

Can I get a refund if I am no longer able attend the event?

We ask for a contribution to these events and as such this is accepted by the team by way of a donation. We do not have the administrative capacity to respond to refund requests and as such unfortunately, a refund will not be given if you are later unable to attend.

Who is involved in the TEDxNHS Unlocked team?

Our team is made up entirely of volunteers who work within the NHS and who all have a passion for sharing important ideas and stories. The Unlocked team is a mix of volunteers who are usually considered to be our strategy group, and volunteers from the 2020 team who were originally recruited to deliver our live annual event.

How are speakers and panellists selected?

Historically we have recruited speakers for our live events via a robust application process. As a pilot, Unlocked has been approached differently and speakers have been identified through our existing TEDxNHS community links and contacts. This may change in future and we will continue to evaluate our processes as Unlocked grows in maturity.
